Ann Marie Silvestri ’75, an alumna and associate professor of the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry at vlog, has received the Medallion of Distinction—the Dugoni School Alumni Association’s highest honor—for her commitment to helping underserved populations.
Silvestri received the award at the 126th Alumni Association Annual Meeting Jan 31 in San Francisco. The annual award celebrates individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the university, alumni association, dentistry profession or local community.
“It was an honor and a privilege to receive the Medallion of Distinction from the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry,” Silvestri said. “I graduated from this dental school 50 years ago. The support and camaraderie that I have felt over the years has kept me close to the administration and alumni. It has always been my enjoyment to support Dugoni with my time, talent and treasure.”
Silvestri, who has been an associate professor at the Dugoni School for 24 years, was a member of the inaugural class of the school’s accelerated three-year program and was one of just three women in her dental school class.
After completing her program at Pacific, Silvestri went on to work as an associate dentist in San Francisco, later joining the San Francisco Public Health Department. She also volunteered as a dental educator at the U.S. Army installation at Fort Riley, Kansas, before founding a general dentistry practice with her husband in San Francisco, where she worked for 30 years.
“Dr. Ann Marie Sylvestri is a model for exceptional alumna produced by the Dugoni School of Dentisty,” said Dean Nader Nadershahi. “It was a privilege to present her with the Medallion of Distinction in recognition of her significant accomplishments and contributions to our school, the Dugoni School Alumni Association, the profession of dentistry, and the oral health of our greater community. It was even more special to recognize her during this alumni weekend where she and her classmates celebrated their 50th class reunion.”
Silvestri also spent 21 years working with the San Mateo Medical Center Dental Clinics to serve the local community. She started her work as a general staff dentist and consultant, and eventually become program director, a role she held from 2004 to 2020.
Under her leadership and vision, the clinics grew into an integral resource for the community and provided dental care to underserved populations as part of a federally qualified health center.
Silvestri currently serves as chair of the San Mateo County Civil Service Commission and a grant committee member for the Sequoia Healthcare District.
Among Silvestri’s professional achievements are her distinctions as a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the volunteer-led non-profit dental organization, Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Silvestri continues to work closely with the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association and the San Mateo Dental Society to volunteer at dental events hosted for the community.
“There is no one more deserving of the Medallion of Distinction award this year other than Dr. Silvestri,” said Dugoni Alumni Association president, Amanda Rae Kronquist. “She has given back to the community for over 50 years and done it with a huge smile and positive attitude. Her commitment to Dugoni, dentistry and oral health care is unmatched.”
Silvestri has served as a member of the Dugoni School Alumni Association Board of Directors for 11 years. She was president from 2002 to 2003 and continues to be an active past president.
