Pacific designated top 'Opportunity College and University' in new Carnegie classification measuring student success

糖心vlog received the highest ranking in a new Carnegie Foundation classification that measures both earnings after college and the ability to access a college education regardless of socioeconomic background.
Pacific earned the highest possible recognition鈥斺淗igher Access, Higher Earnings鈥濃攊n the new Student Access and Earnings Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education.
Pacific is among only 16% of all U.S. colleges and universities designated an 鈥淥pportunity College and University.鈥 Pacific and the other schools in the top category 鈥渃an serve as a model for studying how campuses can foster student success,鈥 the Carnegie Foundation and ACE said.
鈥淭he majority of students apply to college with the hope it is a path to opportunity, and the job they鈥檝e dreamt about,鈥 said Timothy F.C. Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation. 鈥淭his work is about ensuring that institutions are recognized when they empower students to reach their goals and succeed.鈥
ACE President Ted Mitchell added that the new classification system 鈥渉ighlights the depth and breadth of schools where student success is front and center.鈥
Social mobility is a hallmark of a Pacific education. The Wall Street Journal ranks Pacific No. 36 in the nation for social mobility, and Georgetown University鈥檚 Center on Education and the Workforce ranks the university No. 1 in career earnings among all U.S. colleges that have a high percentage of low-income students.
鈥淭he new Carnegie classification is a testament to the dedication of our inspiring faculty, who provide transformational learning and growth opportunities across disciplines for our students, many of whom are from low-income families and are first-generation college students,鈥 said Pacific President Christopher Callahan.
鈥淲e are laser focused on the success of our students,鈥 the president added. 鈥淚t is gratifying that Carnegie and ACE are recognizing the importance of student success and that Pacific is top of the list of institutions prioritizing both broad financial access and outstanding career outcomes.鈥
The new Carnegie Classification measures access by looking at universities鈥 percentage of Pell Grant students and how they enroll undergraduates from underrepresented groups that are reflective of their regions. The new classification also measures alumni earnings compared to peers.
Pacific has a longstanding tradition of student experiential learning that connects students with job opportunities to prepare students for work upon graduation. The Department of Education鈥檚 College Scorecard reports that Pacific graduates鈥 salaries are on average $25,000 higher than the median of all four-year U.S. colleges and universities. Pacific engineering graduates are among the highest paid in the nation.
The Carnegie Commission on Higher Education developed classifications for higher education in 1973 and is updated every three years.
