Women鈥檚 History Month programs during March at 糖心vlog include speakers, panel discussions, networking and more in events that were coordinated by several campus groups.
Professor Jennifer Helgren, chair of the College of the Pacific鈥檚 history department, is collaborating with ASuop, Intercultural Student Success and others to coordinate Pacific鈥檚 Women鈥檚 History Month.
鈥淧acific has tended to have different silos developing their own history events. This was the first year that we decided to coordinate one calendar so that everyone could find all the information in one spot,鈥 Helgren said.
Katherine Marino, a history professor at UCLA who specializes in Latin American and United States women鈥檚 history, kicked the March events with a presentation on 鈥淔eminism for the Americas鈥 on March 3.
Marino is an Organization of American Historians distinguished lecturer. She spoke about some of the early 20th century challenges, confrontations and successes on issues of feminism in the United States and Latin American countries.
Later this month, Pacific鈥檚 20th Annual Women of Distinction Awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m. on March 26 in a virtual ceremony. Helgren said the awards recognize women in the community and at Pacific who have made significant advancements in gender equity or demonstrated public leadership. Nominations for the聽 were accepted through March 10.
聽is posted and will be updated as new events are finalized.

Pacific also is creating a recommended films list for Women鈥檚 History Month. The list will be published soon. Helgren notes an advantage of the online format this year is that 鈥淲e get people from all kinds of different places who don鈥檛 have to travel.鈥
Helgren said her work is motivated by a quote from Gerda Lerner, a historian and advocate for women鈥檚 history: 鈥淲omen鈥檚 history is women鈥檚 rights, an essential, indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long-range vision.鈥
Helgren encourages students to take part in the events.
鈥淭his is a great place to start. Most of these events are geared toward undergraduates,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great place to expand your learning opportunities and get out of the classroom for a bit.鈥
